Fantastic Four (1960s)

The Show:
The Fantastic Four is an animated series produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions and the first animated series based on Marvel's comic book series "Fantastic Four."

Background:
The Fantastic Four featured character designs by Alex Toth, aired on ABC from 1967 to 1970. It lasted for 20 episodes, with repeat episodes airing on ABC until the network cancelled the program, and the episodes were loosely-based on the Marvel Comic story lines of the superhero quartet.
It followed the exploits of a close-knit family of adventures led by the super-intelligent scientist, Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), his then-girlfriend, Sue Storm (Invisible Girl), her brother Johnny Storm (The Human Torch) and Reed's college friend, Ben Grimm (The Thing).
These four humans went up in a rocket ship of Reed's design in a race to be the first humans in space. Before Reed was finished with his research, news came of the impending blastoff of rival governments. So the four humans took off and reached space first, but when they got there they ran into a cosmic storm. Besides being radiated by the cosmic rays, the storm destroyed the instruments of the rocket ship and they headed for a crash landing. Thanks to the brilliant piloting skills of Ben they walk away from the crash, but they find their lives have changed due the effects of the cosmic rays. Reed can now stretch all his body like rubber. Sue can turn invisible and later finds out she can produce force fields. Johnny bursts into flames, but finds he can control the flame and fly. But poor Ben. He turns into an orange rock-like monster with the strength of hundreds but at the cost of his humanity. They decide that their abilities should be used for the betterment of mankind and follow this pursuit and become the world's greatest team of superheroes. The team's major nemesis is the brilliant super villain known as Dr. Doom.
Through a series of transactions, Disney currently holds the rights to the majority of Marvel's 1960s-1990s animated output. However, the 1967-1968 Fantastic Four was produced by Hanna-Barbera, which is part of Time Warner, making the series one of only a handful of Marvel-related TV projects not owned by Disney (which has since acquired Marvel outright).
